Gabrielle views theatre as a profound journey into the ideals, beliefs, and motivations that extend beyond our personal experiences, inviting us to step outside ourselves. As a Scenic Designer, she is deeply engaged with storytelling, transforming spaces into grand, imaginative environments that evoke strong emotions and transport audiences to different worlds. Her goal is to elicit feelings that contrast sharply with everyday life, enriching the narrative and enhancing the overall theatrical experience.
Her background significantly shapes her artistic identity. Growing up in a community with limited resources for theatre, Gabrielle learned to appreciate the value of multifunctional and creative scenic elements. This practical understanding informs her designs, allowing her to blend imagination with functionality in service of the story.
Having navigated a predominantly Black educational environment, Gabrielle is acutely aware of the inequities in access to theatrical resources. This awareness drives her passion for making theatre inclusive and welcoming, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered. She is dedicated to advocating for Black representation in the arts and aims to honor and celebrate African-rooted culture through her work in performance art and design.
Gabrielle approaches her craft with a set of guiding questions that challenge her to explore the essence of her designs: Where are we? What story is being told? How do we want the audience to feel? Are her personal beliefs reflected in her work? Engaging with these questions has fostered her growth as both an artist and an individual, reinforcing her belief that theatre compels us to think deeply beyond the script. For Gabrielle, being a Scenic Designer is not just a profession; it’s a lifelong journey of exploration, connection, and advocacy.
